There are many hoaxes on the internet that claim to be legitimate spy-ware cleaners, blockers and the like, but what they really are are "Scare-Ware". Scare-Ware is designed to SCARE you into installing and running their programs, but what really happens is that problems are exaggerated or your PC is infected with the very objects that you were trying to avoid.
How can you avoid such issues from happening to you? Just remember this rule of thumb, "If you do not recognize a program that is trying to run on your computer to clean up your registry, remove spy-ware or detect and repair issues, by all means, do not allow this program to run." Find programs that you trust and allow them to do their job.
Some examples of trustworthy programs are, Norton 360, Spy-Bot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware.
